Why We Do It
The facts about hunger are shocking when we pay attention. The combination of high domestic food prices, the current global economic crisis, and the neglect of agriculture relevant to very poor people by governments and international agencies has pushed the number of hungry people worldwide to historic levels. More than one billion people are undernourished, an increase from its 2006 estimate of 854 million people. (Source: The State of Food Insecurity in the World, FAO, 2009)
Kids Against Hunger seeks to end the literal hunger of those receiving our meals, but we also satisfy a hunger among prosperous Americans – a hunger for meaning and contribution. By partnering with others locally to package our meals, we’re able to have a positive impact on a global problem. In addition, engaging our youth in the process raises their awareness of the poverty-stricken and teaches them how they too can make a difference.
